200-300 bodies found in Japan's tsunami-hit Sendai

TOKYO, March 11, 2011 (AFP) - Around 200 to 300 bodies were found in a part of Japan's quake and tsunami hit Pacific coast town of Sendai, police said Friday according to media reports.

Kyodo News and Jiji Press agency said the bodies were reported found in Sendai's Wakabayashi ward following the powerful seabed earthquake that sent a massive tsunami slamming into the coast.

Almost all of the about 1,200 households in the district where a tsunami alert was issued were affected by the massive wave, said local officials, according to the news report.

The armed forces said 60,000-70,000 people in Sendai were evacuated to shelters.

Sendai, the capital of Miyagi prefecture, has a population of about one million.
